Dan Zanes picture.pngThe Holidays are here and with them come the usual offering of parties and get togethers. Last night, we found the time to check out one very cool party: The Dan Zanes Holiday House Party at the New Victory Theater. And, this is one party you shouldn’t miss.

In case you didn’t know, Dan Zanes, in addition to being a grammy award winning musician is also that guy you see on Playhouse Disney in between shows hosting impromptu musical get togethers from inside his Brooklyn brownstone.

The Holiday House Party features Dan’s usual intimate style of entertaining, making the audience feel as though they are his long lost friends in his living room just enjoying the jam session. With a cast of diverse musicians and dancers (our family’s personal favorite was most definitely Derick Grant and his children Kaleo and Lulu, aka the tap dancers with soul) arriving throughout the course of the show, the audience is treated to an multicultural celebration of the Holidays with Jewish, Arabic, and Latino Holiday songs, in addition to well known favorites like “Let it Snow” and “Deck the Halls.”

Throughout the show, kids are welcome to dance in the aisles and up close to the stage, which they do. Grown-ups can dance too, and by the end of the show, my husband and I were feeling like we were back in college again trailing the Grateful Dead across the West Coast.

We were really impressed at how cool Dan Zanes is; after all, not every grammy-award winner knows how to pull off a hot pink corduroy suit while rocking out to Holiday songs with a bunch of kids and their parents.

Make sure you stick around after the show, the entire band and guests are in the lower lobby signing autographs, making everyone feel like they were a VIP. The show would make a great Holiday break event.
