Things to Do This Weekend in Westchester: River Festival, Block Party, Family Workshops and More July 20 & 21

The weekend is almost here and there are lots of great things to do in Westchester. The Hudson River Days Festival kicks off on Saturday with tons of events happening all along the Hudson Valley. Mamaroneck Shares summer block party is Friday and Sunday is the Hispanic Heritage Festival in Valhalla.

Looking to escape the heat for a bit? Check out a show! Once Upon This Island, a Caribbean adaptation to The Little Mermaid is showing this weekend at the White Plains Performing Arts Center. The Wiz is also showing at Rosenthal JCC. 

Expect boy band mania at Rye Playland on Saturday with The Pop Explosion Tour featuring Midnight Red, an up-and-coming American boy band that recently opened for and toured with New Kids on the Block. 

On Sunday, head to the Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art and let your history inspire art at Family Art Day Workshop: 'Portraying Your Personal History'.

Hudson River Days Festival - Kingston
Celebrate the Hudson River with live music, tours, hands on activities for kids, free sailing events and more throughout Hudson Valley and NYC all weekend long. Many events are FREE with some paid activities.

Once Upon This Island - White Plains 
Check out this unique Caribbean adaptation of The Little Mermaid performed by White Plains Performing Arts Center's Summer Conservatory Theater Company. Best for ages 10 and up. Showtimes are Friday and Saturday at 7pm. $15 general admission; $10 for high school aged and under.

The Wiz - Pleasantville
The Wiz is showing this weekend weekend at Rosenthal JCC. Enjoy a soulful twist on the classic tale by L. Frank Baum. Showings are Friday at 8pm, Saturday at 2pm and 8pm and Sunday at 7pm. $25 general admission, $20 for students/seniors.

Friday

Mamaroneck Shares - Mamaroneck 
We've already mentioned how much fun we had at Mamaroneck Shares. If you missed the first of these summer block parties, head out this Friday and enjoy live music, face painting, great food and lots of fun activities for kids. All proceeds go to 3 local charities. FREE

Saturday

The Pop Explosion Tour Featuring Midnight Red - Rye
Boy band mania comes to Rye Playland with The Pop Explosion Tour Featuring Midnight Red. Free with park admission for 'standing room only' or lawn viewing. Show starts at 5pm. Spectator passes are $10 for non-residents; FREE for Westchester residents.

Celebrate Greenburgh - Ardsley
Celebrate the town's 225th anniversary at Anthony F. Veteran Park. Take a dip in the pool, enjoy face painting, dunk tanks, live performances and all kinds of family and kid friendly activities, followed by fireworks at 9pm. Festivities start at 10am. Admission to park is FREE; $5 pool entrance fee.

Puppet Show: Butterfly! - Scarsdale
Puppeteer Jill Liflander brings butterflies to life with colorful and imaginative puppets at Greenburgh Nature Center. Dance, listen to stories and play instruments. 11am show is best for ages 4 and under; 1pm show is more suited for ages 4-7. $10

Sunday

Hispanic Heritage Festival - Valhalla
Immerse yourself in Hispanic heritage at this annual festival at Kensico Dam Park. Enjoy live music, traditional Hispanic cuisine and events for the whole family. FREE

Joey Berkley Quartet - Yonkers
Head to Hudson River Museum's new amphitheater to enjoy soulful jazz by musician and composer Joey Berkley, as part of the Museum's Family Sunday events. Concert starts at 2pm; FREE

Family Art Day Workshop: 'Portraying Your Personal History' - Peekskill
Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art is hosting a family friendly workshop. Bring your own images and materials or use supplies provided by the Center to create objects that reflect your personal history. 2-4pm; $5 material fee plus the cost of museum admission.

Beyond Westchester

On Saturday, check out City of Water Day 2013 on Governor's Island, one of the many events planned this weekend during the Hudson River Days Festival. On Sunday, Queens is hosting SummerStage Kids Queens Family Day with a tribute to King of Pop, Michael Jackson. 

Beat the heat this weekend with the Annual New Jersey State Ice Cream Festival or in Connecticut with the Ice Cream Blueberry Bluegrass Bash at Fort Hills Farm. Both events take place Saturday.
