Weekend Events for Kids on Long Island, November 7-8: Cool Magic Show, Tennis Expo, Nature Scavenger Hunt and more!

11/5/09 - By

Now that Halloween is behind us, I can feel a subliminal pressure mounting about the coming Holiday Season. The toy commercials are ramping up, the Toys R Us big book of presents as I call it arrived last Sunday, and I even spotted some tinsel being strewn, but I'm not gonna tell you where. At any rate, in case you hadn't heard, there is one less weekend between Thanksgiving and Christmas this year, meaning once Thanksgiving hits (which is just a few short weeks away), we are pretty much going to be in turbo Holiday mode until January 1st. Take advantage of the calm before the storm this weekend, and check out some of the cool family events going on across the Island:

Long Island Tennis Expo
Saturday, November 7th 11am-4:30pm
Farmingdale State College, Roosevelt Hall

Just because it's cold, windy, and rainy, doesn't mean one of the most popular sports on the Island is off for Winter vacation. Check out the tennis expo for fun and cool activities and events that will help the entire family improve their game. The USTA is offering their QuickStart program, which is an interactive and fun tutorial about the game and how to play it designed just for kids.   For more advanced players, you can check out hte speedserve area and see how fast your serve is (or isn't), play virtual tennis, meet current and former professionals, and naturally check out the latest and greatest new tennis equipment. Photo Shoot with Wildlife and Scavenger Hunt
Saturday, November 7 -Sunday, November 8
Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary
20 Sagamore Hill Rd, Oyster Bay

Upon hearing about one great event, we learned about another one this weekend up at one of our favorite places, the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary (his former home) in Oyster Bay. It is a great place to visit, whether you're there for an event or not, so we decided to post about both; if nothing else, to encourage you to check out this beautiful place during this beautiful season. On Saturday, bring your camera and get up close with hawks, owls, and falcons. The kids love seeing how fluffy the birds are and looking into their eyes. The birds will be on display from 10am-12pm. Admission is $10. On Sunday, check out their Scavenger Hunt. Grab a list and hit the beautiful leaf filled trails looking for various nature signs and signals. From 12pm-3pm. The admission fee is $3. For more information, visit the website, or even better, call at 516-922-3200.
