When I was pregnant with my first babies (twins!), I remember how overwhelming it was to figure out which baby gear I really needed and which I could skip. To make matters worse, the city I lived in didn't have much in the way of baby stores. But expectant DC-area parents can choose from a variety of baby stores in DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia where they can see and try things in person, speak to knowledgable salespeople, score unique finds, and determine whether they really can fit that giant glider in their baby's nursery.

One of our favorite Black-owned businesses in DC, Yinibini Baby is the place to go if you're looking for unique handmade baby clothes. Its onesies, t-shirts, bibs, and other items—all made from domestically-sourced organic cotton and cotton fabrics—feature adorable graphics, patterns, and slogans. The store also sells books, toys, and other items you may not find anywhere else.

2. Pink & Brown Boutique — Alexandria, VA

This award-winning boutique in Old Town Alexandria prides itself on carrying baby and children's clothing made only of 100% organic cotton. You can also find unique and high-quality toys, accessories, and nursery decor. If you see something you like on the website, you can buy it online (before someone else grabs it) and pick it up in-store.

3. Pied Piper Kids — Baltimore, MD

If you like classic baby and kids' clothing—think lots of florals, smocking, and plaid jumpers—this family-owned boutique is the place for you. 4. Pam K. Bambini Children's Boutique — Washington, DC

Pam K. Bambini carries high-end, name-brand clothing and footwear with a European influence for babies and kids ages 0-14. It's one of the best baby stores in DC if you're looking for personalized service: Pam K. herself, the store's Senegal-born-and-raised owner, is often in the shop assisting customers and getting to know her regulars. The store also sells a carefully chosen selection of toys, books, and games.

5. Monday's Child — Alexandria, VA

Monday's Child has been specializing in classic children's clothing—we're talking bubble rompers, smocked dresses, sailor suits, and the like—in sizes newborn to 14 for over 40 years. It also carries special-occasion clothes, baptism gowns, and the DC area's largest selection of First Communion apparel. Pick up some toys and books while you're there, too. And if you want something monogrammed, Monday's Child is the place to do it.

6. Three Littles — Washington, DC

Opened in late 2020, this family-owned shop carries everything you need for baby—furniture and nursery decor, toys and books, strollers and car seats, feeding items, and so much more. Overwhelmed parents and parents-to-be can schedule a free private shopping appointment with a knowledgable staff member—how I wish I would have had that when I was pregnant! 8. CapitalKidz — Takoma Park, MD

CapitalKidz is like a superstore for baby gadgets—it focuses solely on selling baby and toddler gear at affordable prices. This is the place to go if you're in the market for a stroller, a car seat, a high chair, or any other gear for your little one. There are some pricier things, but you can also find great deals on open-box items both in-store and online.

9. Buy Buy Baby — Rockville, MD; Springfield, Woodbridge, Dulles, and Fredericksburg, VA

The last remaining large baby-store chain, Buy Buy Baby is a one-stop shop for all things baby-related. You can get diapers and wipes, cribs and changing tables, and everything in between here. Coupons, a generous rewards program, and frequent sales help new parents save money. Buy Buy Baby is also a popular place to set up a baby registry, because seriously—there's nothing you can't get here for babies.

10. Target — Various locations in DC, MD, and VA

It's happened to the best of us—you go into Target to buy "just one thing" and leave with a cartful of items. And when you have a baby, that cart can get even more stuffed! Though every Target store has a decent-sized baby section, you'll find the largest inventory online, where you can shop—and register—for baby gear, furniture, clothing, food and formula, diapers and wipes, toys, and more. You can also save money through the Target Circle rewards program, the Target RedCard, the twice-yearly car seat trade-in event, and loads of sales and promotions.

11. Walmart — Various locations in DC, MD, and VA

Like Target, you can find plenty of baby gear, nursery furniture, clothing, diapers and wipes, feeding items, toys, and more in Walmart stores at competitive prices, but you'll find the largest selection online. Pottery Barn Kids is one of the best places to shop for high-end baby and children's furniture collections, bedding sets in a variety of cute and fun themes, nursery and bedroom decor, bath linens, and more. The store also carries toys, kitchen items, and baby gear. It's certainly not cheap, but the items will last for years—my kids' eight-year-old quilts have been through the wringer and they still look good as new. Plus, you'll get a 20% completion discount on most baby registry items that haven't been purchased up to 180 days after baby's arrival.

13. Bellies & Babies Consignment Boutique — Alexandria, VA

Bellies & Babies is a great place to buy gently used baby, kids', and maternity clothing; baby gear; and toys at affordable prices, both in-store and online. Moms-to-be can also rent high-end, designer maternity dresses for formal events at a fraction of their retail cost. It's easy to consign your items, too—once you've sold things at the store once, you can do "Drop N Runs" of one bag at a time. Staff will later go through the bag and sell the items for you.

14. The Growing Years — Kensington, MD

This children's consignment boutique carries gently worn baby, kids', and maternity clothing; baby and children's shoes; books; and baby gear in nearly perfect condition. Most of the store's inventory is also available online. To consign items you must make an appointment, with a limit of two appointments per year and 45 items per appointment.

15. 529 Kids Consign — Alexandria, VA

529 is an upscale children's and maternity consignment boutique, meaning you'll only find higher-end brands like Mini Boden, Lilly Pulitzer, and Hanna Andersson for your budding fashionistas. You can also consign items by making an appointment to bring in up to 50 pieces at a time.
